Mikel Deuna - St. Michael Festival
The day of Saint Michael Archangel is the 29th of September. Our celebration takes place on the Saturday before or after that date.
Mikel Deuna, San Miguel, or Saint Michael Archangel is known as the original Patron Saint and protector of the Basque people. The Navarrese mountain of Aralar is considered the Basque home of Saint Michael the Archangel. Christians in general regard Saint Michael as the leader of God's army in the battle against evil. St. Michael is the patron of grocers, mariners, paratroopers, and police officers.
Many of the ancestors of our club members received sacraments in churches named San Miguel. The Basque towns of Ispaster, Ereño, Oñati, Amorebieta, Iurreta, Mendata, Zalla, Anguiozar, and Eibar among others have churches named after Saint Michael.
The aim of this festival is to share a day of unique Basque cultural traditions with our friends, neighbors, and the community at large. The day includes bilingual Mass, Procession, Sword Dance, lunch, and games.
